I don't know shit about lifting, but for the protein intake thing, there's controversy on that point. I would suggest you not to go crazy about getting 1 or 2 grams per day. If you're having shakes or stuff like that to get that amount, don't, you don't need to.
Even so, having too much protein won't make you no wrong, so if you eat about 2 grams/kg or more because you have too much meat/fish/whatever regularly, keep doing it.
