It's just about consistency. Everyone's body is different. Some people get results working out 1-2 times a week, some need 4-5, some work out everyday. Only thing that matters is that you stick with it, figure out what works for you over time, and give it 100%. Everyone has to start somewhere.
I can somewhat relate to you. Used to be really strong but also really fat. Dropped 80lbs in 7 months but lost a good amount of strength with it; now I'm starting from the ground up again, literally.
